Old Panama

Panama la Vieja, or Panama Viejo, was the first European city founded on the Isthmus of Panama in 1519 by Pedro Arias de Ávila. It served as an important commercial and administrative center during the colonial period, especially in the transit of wealth from Peru to Europe. In 1671, the city was sacked and destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan, leading to its abandonment and the establishment of present-day Panama City.

Today, the ruins of Panama la Vieja are an archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore historic structures such as St. Joseph’s Church and the cathedral tower, and learn about colonial history at the visitor center. The site offers guided tours and educational activities that allow tourists to immerse themselves in the rich history of the first colonial city on the Isthmus of Panama.
