The Sleeping Indian, El Valle de Antón

This natural phenomenon, located in the province of West Panama, is more than a simple geological formation. It is the heart of a deep and moving legend. The story of the Sleeping II Dormita begins with a young indigenous woman of extraordinary beauty and bravery. In ancient times, she was betrothed to a brave warrior who was to leave for a tough battle. Although their hearts were full of love and hope, fate played a trick on them. The warrior never returned, and the young woman, devastated by the loss, retired to the mountains to mourn her sadness.  When she reached her refuge, she lay down on the ground and the pain in her heart seemed to transform into the very earth that surrounded her. In her pain, it is said that her tears formed rivers that flow through the valley, while the green of the vegetation covered the ground like a blanket of comfort.

The figure of the Sleeping India was immortalized in the mountains, with its silhouette clearly visible to those who look at it from afar. Its peaks represent the head and breasts of the young woman, while its valleys and hills form the outline of her reclining body. Today, the Sleeping II Dormita is not only a natural wonder that adorns the Panamanian landscape, but also a symbol of eternal love and the deep connection between man and the earth.

The silhouette of India continues to inspire those who behold it, serving as a reminder of the cultural richness and respect for the stories that shape our world. It is also ideal for hiking, photography, picnics and guided excursions.
